Annanda Chaga is never farmed. It is carefully harvested from the untamed Boreal Forest of Northern Ontario, where chaga forms slowly on living birch trees over many years of northern seasons and frozen winters. Each harvest reflects patience, restraint, and respect for the forest ecosystem.

Often referred to as “Black Gold” of the woods, birch‑grown chaga is a dense, sterile conk that develops gradually on birch trees, incorporating naturally occurring compounds from its host over decades of growth. Its appearance, structure, and composition are shaped entirely by place, climate, and time.

What Is Chaga Mushroom (Birch Chaga)?

Chaga mushroom (Inonotus obliquus) is a wild‑harvested fungus that grows primarily on living white and yellow birch trees in cold northern forests.

Unlike common shelf mushrooms or tree burls, true birch chaga forms as a hardened, charcoal‑like conk on the outside of the tree. Over long periods of growth, it absorbs compounds originating from the birch host, including naturally occurring betulinic acid derivatives and melanin, which contribute to its dark colour and dense structure.

Because chaga can be easily misidentified and may grow on non‑birch species, proper identification and verification are essential for responsible harvesting and use.
