Chaga Mushroom FAQ
Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a wild fungus that grows on living birch trees in cold northern forests, including across Canada’s boreal region. It appears as a rough, black, charcoal-like growth on the outside of the tree, with a rust-orange interior when harvested.
Unlike typical mushrooms, chaga forms as a dense structure called a sterile conk rather than a cap and stem, and it has traditionally been prepared as a slow-brewed forest decoction.

Chaga appears as a dense, black, cracked growth on the outside of birch trees, with a rust-orange interior when properly harvested. It forms directly on the trunk and does not resemble typical cap-and-stem mushrooms.
If you're trying to identify chaga in the wild, see our chaga mushroom identification guide.
Chaga tea is prepared by gently heating chaga in water below boiling (around 80 °C / 176 °F) and allowing it to simmer or steep over time. Preparation varies depending on whether chunks, tea-cut, or powder are used.
