Freshly Milled • Canadian Grown • Product of Canada

ALPISTE™ Flour is freshly milled from food-grade hairless canary seed (Phalaris canariensis L.) grown in Canada.

With a mild, slightly nutty flavour, ALPISTE™ Flour is a versatile cereal-grain flour for breads, baked goods, pancakes, cereals, smoothies and everyday recipes.

Health Canada recognizes dehulled glabrous (hairless) canary seed for human consumption, including use as whole-grain flour and milled ingredients in bakery, cereal, pasta and snack foods.[1]

Milled Fresh in Small Batches

Unlike our whole ALPISTE™ seeds, flour is milled in small batches to help maximize freshness.

We keep ALPISTE™ as whole food-grade canary seed and mill flour as needed rather than holding large quantities of pre-milled flour.

The result is a simple flour made from one Canadian-grown grain:

Food-grade hairless canary seed.

What Is ALPISTE™ Flour?

ALPISTE™ Flour is made by milling dehulled food-grade hairless canary seed into a fine flour.

Hairless, or glabrous, canary-seed varieties differ from older varieties historically associated with bird feed. The hairless varieties do not have the tiny sharp hairs, called spicules, attached to the hull.[2]

Health Canada's assessment specifically recognizes dehulled hairless canary seed for uses including whole meal, whole-grain flour and other milled food ingredients. [1]

Is ALPISTE™ Flour Gluten-Free?

Health Canada states that hairless canary seed was demonstrated to be gluten-free. However, canary seed contains other proteins that may be similar to proteins associated with wheat allergy.[1]

Because of that distinction, wheat allergy requires separate consideration.

Wheat Allergy Notice

May not be suitable for consumers with a wheat allergy.

Health Canada indicates that canary seed and foods containing canary seed require a wheat-allergy advisory.[1]

Very nice on oatmeal

This is very nice sprinkled on oatmeal or added to pancake batter. It’s a little pricey as compared to, say, flaxseed meal or hemp hearts, but it’s good stuff!

Thank you for sharing! Alpiste is indeed a special grain—higher in protein than most cereals and loaded with beneficial enzymes. We're so happy to hear it’s becoming a staple in your morning ritual!

The "Hairy" Issue: Standard canary seed has tiny "hairs" (silica fibers) that are dangerous for humans. Human-grade Alpiste is a specific, hairless variety that is much more difficult and expensive to grow and process.

Protein Punch: Alpiste is about 21% protein, which is significantly higher than most common grains.

Enzyme Wealth: It is particularly prized for its lipase enzyme, which many people use specifically to support healthy inflammation levels and digestion—benefits that go beyond what flax or hemp offer.
